Travel News for Week of December 10

By December 10, 2017Blog

Hi Everyone,

TSA may be considering merging the popular PreCheck and Global Entry Programs.   “Delivering better security at a lower cost might be achieved by merging two of the “trusted traveler” programs that have become so popular with airline passengers,” the head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said this week.   In a speech before the airport industry, TSA Administrator David Pekoske said merging the TSA’s PreCheck program with the Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Global Entry programs, would streamline management of the two operations, and with better integration, possibly enhance security.  While this is just a proposal, new technology may allow this to happen sooner rather than later.

Luggage makers have been touting the next generation of luggage that can weigh themselves, track themselves, lock and unlock at the touch of a smartphone and even charge your electronics and double as a Wi-Fi hotspot.   Luggage is a great gift at any time of the year, but if you are luggage shopping, keep in mind the following:   Multiple airlines have instituted a “smart luggage ban.” The part of the product in question is the suitcase’s battery (usually a lithium), which must be removed in order to check your bag.

Word has it that Delta Air Lines plans to start charging basic economy passengers checked baggage fees on flights to Europe. The airline plans to charge $60 for the first bag and $100 for the second bag, a change that will apply to tickets bought after Dec. 6 for flights departing April 10 and beyond.    Delta and other major airlines have long allowed at least one free checked bag on flights to Europe. That policy will remain for other types of tickets, the airline said.
