Weekly Travel Specials for August 22

Hi Everyone,

Disney raised their ticket prices a couple of weeks ago, but this week they announced three new Fall promotions.

  • If you are just looking for a resort room at Disney World but don't need the ticket package, you can save at least 25%.
  • Purchase a four night, five day package at Disney Moderate Resorts by December 20 and receive the free Disney Dining Plan.  This offer is good for most arrivals beginning in October.  There are some blackout dates.
  • The third offer is for those purchasing a five night package by Nov. 21.  Receive a Disney gift card worth up to $500.  Again, this offer is good for most dates beginning in October and ending mid-February.

News from the National Transportation Safety Board:  They are recommending that all passengers-kids under 2 included- have their own seats on planes.  That would mean infants would no longer be allowed to sit in their parents' laps and would no longer fly free.  The FAA has rejected this proposal several times so stay tuned.

With commercial flights fuller than ever, bumped passengers may face long waits.   Denied boarding remains extremely rare but in the cases where it does happen, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood wants to raise the cap on compensation from $800 to $1300.   The Air Transport Association says it will not challenge the higher limits- USA Today 8/17

Weekly Travel Specials for August 16
Hi Everyone,
We've spent the last few days touring Disney (yes, it is hot in Florida in August) and have had a wonderful time.   While we usually stay right on Disney property, this time we stayed at the Marriott Grande Lakes.   This is an amazing resort and the best feature of all is a 24,000 square foot  "Lazy River" pool that is  unbelievable.  Of course, Marriott, is more than happy to sell you a tube but  the $7 is well worth the price.   Don't think that you will save any money staying here rather than on Disney property, but if you want to get away from the crowds, this is a great alternative.  I would definitely come back to this hotel.
We took advantage of the BackStage tour of the Disney hydroponics labs and got a very private tour and explanation of how Disney is researching different methods of growth and fertilization.   This tour is not on a brochure but is available right outside the Soaring attraction.
I don't think a week goes by that someone doesn't ask me about exchanging currency and what to carry when traveling abroad.   Carrying a lot of cash is usually not a good idea.  Years ago, travelers cheques were the gold standard but not everyone honors them anymore and, in my opinion, they are probably more trouble than they are worth.
First, call your credit card  and ATM companies to find out what their fees are.   Different banks and credit unions fees vary widely.    Let your bank/credit union know when and where you are going to be traveling so that your card is not rejected.  Most travelers these days tend to use plastic: debit/bank cards for ATM cash withdrawals, and credit cards for purchases. Obviously, everyone must make their own decisions on how and when to exchange their currency, and what to carry when traveling.

Weekly Travel Specials for August 9

Hi Everyone,

If you have traveled to Las Vegas lately, you may have noticed something relatively new when you checked in to your hotel.   Although resort fees have been around a long time, they are becoming more commonplace and more costly.   In addition to your room charge, you may notice a fee tacked on that could be as much as $25 per night!    However, there are still some properties not charging a fee.  At the time of this writing, that includes the Harrah properties.

Spirit Airlines just instituted a fee for carryons!   You are allowed one free personal item/bag which must fit underneath the seat (16X4X12").  Also items such as cameras, diaper bags, assistive devices, car seats, and strollers do not count toward your baggage allowance.  Any carryon baggage other than this must be stored in the overhead bins with fees ranging from $20 for $9 Fare Club members to $45 for check in at the gate.

Continental Airlines is experimenting with the first "self-boarding" procedure in the US at its Houston hub.  Passengers swipe a key card at a gate kiosk that allows them to enter the jet bridge.- USA Today 7/27

Disney prices went up last Thursday!

For all you pet lovers, Disney World's next major attraction will be the Best Friends Pet Resort, scheduled to open on August 27.   It will offer boarding, bedtime stories, and a water park for dogs.  The resort, which will have more than 50,000 square feet of space, has plenty of room for dogs, cats, and assorted other small animals.   Standard indoor boarding for dogs runs $37 nightly, but you can upgrade to a "vacation villa" with a flat screen TV for your best friend.   Pets can be left for the day without overnight boarding and owners can drop in to play.  This new resort replaces the kennels that exist at the present time.  It will be located on Bonnet Creek Parkway across from the Port Orleans Resort.
