Travel News for the Week of January28

Hi Everyone,

Each year Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection publishes a list of the top safest countries in the world.  In order: 1. Canada, 2. Switzerland 3.Norway, 4. Ireland  5. Netherlands 6.United Kingdom,   7.Portugal, 8. Denmark, 9.Iceland, 10.Australia, 11. New Zealand, 12. Japan, 13. France, 14. Spain, 15.Brazil.

If you are planning a trip outside the US this year, check your passport.  The rule of thumb is that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the end of your trip.  Some countries allow you to travel if you only have 3 months left on your passport but it is always better to go with the 6 month rule.   It is very stressful to pull out your passport a couple weeks before your trip only to find out that it has just expired or will expire in the near future.  Passport processing times are back to normal  but it can still take 6-8 weeks to receive a new passport.  Please remember that you need a passport whenever you fly outside of the US and its territories.  Many people are stunned when I tell them they need a passport for Mexico or Canada.  People are confused as the laws are different when you are flying as opposed to driving.

If you are taking a cruise this year you will have a great time.  It is important to remember that the initial cost of the cruise you choose, may not be what your real cost.    Keep in mind that many cruises now charge for room service delivery, access to the internet, some onboard activities, drinks (alcohol and nonalcohol), excursions, even some items on the regular dining room menu.   Typically, luxury cruise lines include more of these extras but always read the fine print so you know what is and isn’t included.

Just an FYI.  My email has a new extension to conform to new government rules when sending a mass email.  My email remains lynn@fullertravelservice.com   You will only see the extension on any mass email.

Hi Everyone,

Going to Vegas soon?  You should know that standing or stopping is now banned on pedestrian bridges on the Las Vegas Strip.   People often pause to take photos on these bridges but a new ordinance that went into effect this week prohibits people from standing or stopping on the bridges and up to 20 feet surrounding connected stairs, elevators, and escalators. . Penalties could be 6 months in jail or a $1000 fine.-AP

Did you know that you can set a fare alert  to notify you if your airline’s price decreases?   Since the pandemic, most change fees have been eliminated.  When purchasing a flight, make sure you are not in basic economy and that your fare is changeable. Many reservations will say, “changeable but not refundable”.   You can set an alert with Google flights or SkyScanner or other fare alert programs.  You don’t really have anything to lose and may get a nicer fare if you watch that pricing.-Fodors, Laird 1/15/24

Airline lounges are becoming more and more crowded and lines to enter are getting longer.   You don’t need airline status to get into some lounges as credit card companies have gotten into the airport lounge business.  American Express and Chase Sapphire are two of the companies building lounges for their card holders.    If you have a premium card, it may be worthwhile to check them out.

This week Venice announced a fee for day visitors to Venice, Italy.  The fee is supposed to begin on April 24 and you can get the pass online before travel. Right now it is only for people just visiting for the day but all the particulars have not been released.  Stay tuned.

Hi Everyone,

Disney has a new dining special for their Disney+ subscribers.  If  you stay at one of the lower priced resorts, you will be able to take advantage of the quick dining.  If you are stay at one of the more expensive resorts you will be eligible for regular dining.  You must purchase at least a 4 day park hopper ticket.  If interested just go to Disney.com for more info and eligible dates.

After several weeks of being shutdown while under threat from nearby volcanic activity, the Blue Lagoon in Iceland hs finally resumed full operations.

When traveling to your destination many people like to book excursions to see areas of interest they may not see from their resort or ship.   These are generally a great deal of fun. You’ll learn a bit about local culture and see more of the area.   One word of caution.  Make sure that whatever company you book an excursion with is licensed and has a good track record.  That guy you meet on the beach who promises to show you the area may at best be unlicensed or at worst, have questionable motives.   Cruise lines and  tour companies hire licensed and insured vendors.  The price may be higher  and things can still go wrong on one of their excursions, but the chance of a  disaster is much lower.

Hi Everyone,

I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season.

One of the most frequent questions I receive is “Do I need a passport to cruise?”   The answer is , “it depends”.   If you are going on a closed loop cruise (departing and returning to the same port in the US), the simple answer may be no depending on the cruise line.  However I would strongly suggest that everyone have a valid passport that will not expire for at least 6 months from your return date.   Why? If there is a medical emergency and you need to disembark early or a family emergency that requires you to disembark and fly home,  it will be very difficult to do that without a passport.  The last thing you need is to find yourself in a foreign country with a problem and no easy way to get home.

Here is a rundown of the baggage fees for  Delta, American and United.    These fees are based on flying in main cabin.

Delta  Domestic flights

All passengers on a Delta flight can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item free of charge. Personal items — such as a laptop bag, briefcase, small backpack, or diaper bag — must fit under the seat in front of you. you’re only allowed a personal item on Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer due to limited overhead space.  Fee for a checked bag is $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second bag.  These fees are different and many times waived for Medallion members or when using certain credit cards.

Delta International flights 1st bag free. Most airlines allow a second bag free as well.

American Airlines Domestic

Fee for first checked bag: $30 for the first bag, Second bag $40

American Airlines International Free for first bag, varies for second bag depending on destination.

United Airlines Domestic    Fee for first checked bag: $35. Second bag $45

United International Typically free for the first bag.  $100 for the second bag.

Similar to Delta, United and American may waive fees for passengers who have status with either a card or frequent flier miles.

Interestingly, The airlines do not recognize Mexico or Canada as international destinations so fees may apply as they do for domestic flights.

The Zoom meeting scheduled for this Tuesday has been cancelled as we are no longer have British Landscapes on our schedule.

Hi Everyone,

It looks like the TSA is getting into the self serve business.  They are launching a trial of automated self serve security screenings called Screening at Speed which will involve little to no interaction with TSA officers.   The trial will start with Precheck travelers and the initial airport will be the Las Vegas airport.  This complete article can be found on SmarterTravel.com,12/12/23

I stumbled upon this  an interesting article in Travel and Leisure this week.  You may already know this but I did not.  For years, Delta Airlines has been publishing trading cards for aviation enthusiasts.   Each collectible card features a different aircraft in Delta’s fleet corresponding to the type of aircraft each pilot flies.  The cards get a redesign every five years or so.  If you have a desire to start a collection,  ask your Delta pilot very nicely, and if he or she has any, they will share.  Keep in mind that not all pilots carry them.-Travel and Leisure

American Airlines has a new Smart Gating technology to address the issue of waiting for another plane to depart to get to the gate after landing.   Many times we land a bit early only to find another plane is occupying the gate we’ve been assigned. American’s new technology uses real time data to assign planes that have just touched down to the nearest available gate.

If you haven’t signed up for our Zoom meeting on January 8 to hear about our British Landscapes tour,  please see the notes in red below.   It costs nothing and there is no pressure to sign  up for this tour.-Travel and Leisure

Just an FYI: We will not publish our blog on  Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve.  Skip and I  wish you all the best of  this most special season.    We’ll be back on January 7.

Hi Everyone,

A few weeks ago I mentioned that Global Entry was developing a mobile app that will help speed you on your way when using.   At that time, there were only 7 airports using the app.  That has now more than doubled with more airports on board.   Detroit is one of those airports.  I looked for the Global Entry App in the Apple Store but did not see it.  I don’t have a PC so didn’t check Google Play.  I suspect it will show up in the near future.  With the App you’ll be able to skip the kiosks when returning to the US. You’ll be able to take a selfie and take it right to an agent who will compare to what they have on file and send you on your way.-The Points Guy

Smarter Travel had an interesting article this week about whether or not you should lock your luggage when traveling.  While we always lock our luggage, we are under no illusion that those small locks will deter anyone intent on opening the luggage.  We lock them in the hopes that they will help the zippers stay together so our clothes don’t end up spilling all over the place.  Most of luggage thefts are crimes of opportunity and if it is a little more difficult to open your luggage instead of the one next to you, the criminals may just move along.– Smarter Travel, Nov, 2023

Most people do not realize that if they are carrying large amounts of money out of the US, that they must declare it when leaving the US.  You cannot take  more  than $10,000 out of the country without declaring it.  That amount is the combined amount of a family traveling together.   If you don’t declare it, and Customs finds it, you will lose your money.-View from the Wing.

Tip of the Week:  If you take a gondola ride in Venice, stay seated.  Some tourists wanting to take pics stood up in their gondola this week and capsized the boat.   The 5 passengers and the gondolier were dumped in the water.  Keep in mind these canals are far from sanitary.  They are cleaned very infrequently and are full of human waste and trash.-USA Today

Hi Everyone,

Iceland, Denmark, and Ireland top the Institute for Economics and Peace’s Global Peace Index for 2023. The three most peaceful countries  came out tops in acceptance of the rights of others, equitable distribution of resources, good relationship with neighbors and free flow of information.  Iceland has been found to be the most peaceful country in the world for every year since the index began 17 years ago.-CNN

400,000 tickets for the 2024 Paris Olympics were released this week.  If you are thinking of traveling to Paris during this time, prepare yourself for crowds and  very expensive hotel rooms.   Hotels are already hiking their prices for the dates of the Olympics and ParaOlympics.   The Olympics will be held at various venues in and around Paris, including the Seine River.

If you think airlines are the only ones guilty of overbooking, think again.  Passengers in Brisbane trying to board their cruise ship were turned away as the cruise line was overbooked.   They had booked a “guarantee” room and when they arrived there were no rooms left.  It happens. Guarantees happen when cruise ships begin to get full.  Just like airlines, cruise ships have no shows and they want to fill those rooms so they book people in”guarantees”.  Normally, this is no problem, but once in a while everyone shows up!

Travel News for the Week of November 26

Hi Everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!   As we move toward Christmas , the Christmas Markets are opening.  While the US does have some Christmas Markets, the tradition is a long one in Europe.  The first recorded Christmas Market was held in Vienna in 1298 and the tradition has spread across the world.   Tour operators and river cruise lines now plan trips around the European Christmas Markets and they sell out very quickly.

Here are a few of the oldest and the best:

  • Wiener Christkindlmarkt, Austria  Reindeer rides, ferris wheels, and nativity scenes encapsulate the season. Although there are around 20 Christmas markets in Vienna, the Wiener Chrstkindlemarkt is one of its oldest and most traditional.    It is held in front of the City Hall and features an ice rink, and a giant maple tree decked out with hundreds of glittering hearts. Austrian sausages, gingerbread cookies,  and homemade Christmas punch are among the offerings along with plenty of stalls full of traditional Austrian products.
  • Basel Christmas Market, Switzerland   Most Swiss towns have festive markets but Basel is the biggest  and reportedly the best around.  Separated into two different sections at Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz  there are over 250  decorated stalls selling Christmas spices, decorations, and candles. Family attractions include the Christmas fairytale forest  and a festive train.  Attendees can also take a walk up the stairwell of St. Martin’s tower for incredible views of the light illuminating the old town.
  • Strasbourg Christmas Market, France.  Strausberg’s markets began in 1570. It is spread over more than 10 locations, including a section of the UNESCO world heritage site of Grand Ile. The market lights up the city with thousands of lights and ornaments.  The market draws over 2 million people each year and features hundreds of wooden chalet stalls selling everything from decorations and presents to local Alsatian wine.-CNN,11/22/23

I have sent people to the Christmas  markets on river cruises and they all say it was an experience of a lifetime.  if you ever have the opportunity to visit the Christmas markets, go!

On another note, if you are traveling during the Christmas holidays, you may want to pre-book your spot at an airport parking lot.  Most airport lots will be full over Christmas but you can call ahead to insure there is a spot for you when you arrive.  Also, make sure that you have your airline phone number with you so that in case of an issue, you can call them immediately.  You may not realize that you can also chat with your airline and it may be much quicker.   Download your airline’s app to make this simpler.

Hi Everyone,

If you are planning a cruise or a tour to the Caribbean, you may want to leave your camo clothing home. Wearing camouflage is illegal in some Caribbean countries.   Many of those countries only want their military in camouflage.  If you are stopped, you may be fined. The rules typically apply to camouflage of any color or pattern, and to both clothing and accessories.

Aruba has announced the successful demo of the Aruba Happy One Pass program and will install it at their international airport in the coming months.  This AHOP is a digital travel credential system that allows visitors to hold their data on their mobile devices and share it directly with immigration officials to create a hassle free travel experience centered around privacy.  Once installed the new system eliminates the need to show your physical passports.

JD Power just released its annual report on the best and worst airports in the U.S.  The 5 best major airports in the US:

  1. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
  2. Minneapolis St Paul International Airport
  3. Harry Reid International Airport
  4. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
  5. Miami International Airport

The worst airports in the US:

  1. Newark Liberty International Airport
  2. Toronto Pearson International Airport
  3. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
  4. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Hi Everyone,

It looks as though the passport wait times are coming down.   Right now the wait time is 7-10 weeks for normal delivery and 3-5 weeks for expedited.  These times don’t include mailing time.  Although this is looking better, much depends on where you live and which processing center is taking care of your passport.    My advice remains the same.   Get passports or renewals done as soon as possible.    A bit of trivia: Between October, 2022 and September, 2023 47 million passports were processed.

The Blue Lagoon , one of Iceland’s most iconic destinations, is currently closed for at least a week due to increased seismic activity.   This activity has led to magma flowing towards the earth’s surface around the area where the Lagoon is located.  The nation’s international airport and the Svartsengi Power Plant are also in that area.   I am keeping a special eye on Iceland as we are scheduled to travel there next summer.   Hopefully, this will be a short term event.  I still remember several years ago when we had a huge group in Rome and all of Europe closed due to a volanic eruption in Iceland.  Very much hoping  Iceland does not experience another big issue and that everyone in that beautiful land is okay.-Travel and Leisure.

Brightline, the new train service in Florida, just published a Black Friday Sale for their customers.  They are not the only company publishing Black Friday sales.  If you are thinking of a cruise, an all-incclusive, or a tour, now is a pretty good time to book as you may be able to find special sales this month.

It has always been difficult for people who travel alone to book a cruise stateroom at a decent price. Typically, cruse lines charge almost twice as much for a single as they do for two people.   Norwegian may be changing that.  The cruise line will add close to 1,000 staterooms across their fleet for guests sailing on their own. NCL is introducing Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview, and Solo Balcony cabin categories for sailings departing  January 2 or later.
