Travel News for Week of August 6

By August 6, 2017Blog

Hi Everyone,

TSA is introducing new technology that links your ID and your boarding pass.   The TSA has begun testing new technology for Pre-Check passengers that matches the name on a passenger’s ID to TSA’s Secure Flight vetting system, eliminating the need for passengers to take out their boarding pass before going through security.  If you are pre-screened to use TSA Pre-Check, you will be able to whiz through the line even faster.   All passengers need to do is present their ID, which is scanned by a TSA agent. The new technology will then verify the authenticity of your identification before your bags are inspected.   With the line moving much faster and ID checks being less cumbersome, passengers can stow their boarding pass after they check in for their flight and only retrieve it for boarding.   While the technology is only available at a few airports around the country—including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Dulles International airport, O’Hare International Airport and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport—TSA says that it will be expanding to even more this August. Keep an eye out in a Pre-Check line near you.

If you are a fan of Sandals Resorts, good news!   A spokesperson for Sandals Resorts International announced this week that the company will be opening a new Beaches Barbados by 2020 with construction slated for September of 2018.    Beaches is the family arm of the Sandals brand.    Also, the company’s second Sandals resort in Barbados,  Sandals Royal Barbados, is still on track for a December 20 opening.

A bit of trivia from USA Today Travel:    If you are prone to altitude sickness when flying, buy a seat on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350. The cabins on these planes are pressurized about 2,000 feet lower than on other commercial airliners. You’ll find that you breathe easier and sleep better on long flights. The interiors of these planes are also more humid so your nasal passages and eyes, if you wear contacts, will be more comfortable.

Young adults, particularly those 18 to 21 years old, sometimes run into difficulty with travel in the United States. Booking a hotel room may be particularly challenging, since many hotels set a minimum age requirement for guests. Laws vary significantly in other countries. Advance planning is critical to avoid disappointment at the check-in counter.   It is virtually impossible to rent a hotel room in the United States if you are under 18, the legal age of majority in all states. The two basic reasons for this are liability and contract enforcement. Contracts signed by minors are not legally enforceable, putting the hotel at risk if underage patrons do not pay. Also, hotels do not want to take legal responsibility for minors. If something should happen to a minor during the stay, the hotel could be held liable.

While talking about that, we are coming to the time of year that I always get phone calls from parents who want to send their high school seniors off to spring break unsupervised.    Just an FYI:  I will not book those trips.    I am more than happy to book spring break trips for families but not for unsupervised students.
