Travel News for Week of December 17

By December 17, 2017Blog

Hi Everyone,

The State Department is making changes designed to make it easier to access clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information about every country in the world. The first step was the improved website.  The next step will be the launch of new travel Advisories and Alerts for all countries, which will be available on in mid-January 2018.    The current system of Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts will be replaced with a unified Travel Advisory for each country following a consistent format and apply one of four standard levels of advice:

Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions                                                                                                                                       Level 2 – Exercise Increased Caution                                                                                                                                        Level 3 – Reconsider Travel                                                                                                                                                           Level 4 – Do Not Travel

One of the questions that I get asked very frequently is “Can I go on a cruise without a passport?”    The answer is maybe.  If you’re taking a closed loop cruise (a cruise that departs and returns from the same U.S. port), you’re only required to travel with a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. But, it’s still recommended that you travel with a passport.    If you should have some type of emergency and need to fly back to the US, you are going to have problems without a passport which is the reason it is still recommended.   If you’re not on a closed loop cruise, you’re required to travel with a valid passport which is the most dependable form of identification in all cases of cruise travel.

There was big news from the Mouse this week.   An article by Michelle Barran in this week’s Travel Weekly wrote: ‘The Walt Disney Company announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion which gives Disney access to the Marvel characters X-Men and Fantastic Four and also adds Avatar and National Geographic to its collection of assets.  Under the terms of the deal, pending government antitrust approval, Disney would assume ownership of 21st Century Fox’s film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000; its television units; and National Geographic, in addition to several other Fox properties.  “The agreement provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories,” Disney said in a release.  Disney also plans to integrate the resources that will be made available to the company through the National Geographic brand.   “Through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic — whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources — Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it,” the company said in a release.

Note:   Our blog will not publish on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve.   We will return January 7.
