Travel News for Week of January 7

By January 7, 2018Blog

Hi Everyone,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ready for some travel!!

In 2005, the Real ID Act established nationwide requirements for state IDs as a post-9/11 security measure. When Congress passed this act, the prospect of a vast number of U.S. travelers not being able to board planes by February 2018 because their driver’s license was determined not a compliant form of identification seemed highly unlikely.   But as the Act’s Jan. 22, 2018, deadline neared, there was increasing worry that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would implement identification restrictions that would have forced airline passengers to seek other approved forms of ID, like a passport.     The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has officially extended its Jan. 22, 2018 deadline for the implementation of the REAL ID Act. The TSA has confirmed that it would not start requiring passports to travel domestically from states not in compliance with the REAL ID Act until Oct. 1, 2020.   This is important for those of us in Michigan as we are one of the states waiting for an extension to be approved.   This means we won’t have to worry about traveling domestically without the new REAL ID until October of 2020.   Hopefully, the IDs of people in all states will meet the requirements.

In the aftermath of the mass shooting in Las Vegas, hotels are now rethinking their policies regarding Do Not Disturb signs on guests’ doors. Hilton is the latest company to revise their policy.  They are now suggesting that a team member alert a security or duty manager if a Do Not Disturb sign or light has been in place on a guestroom door for more than 24 consecutive hours.

We learned a few weeks ago that four Walt Disney World hotels in Orlando– the Polynesian Village Resort, the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the Contemporary Resort and the adjoining Bay Lake Tower—have replaced the Do Not Disturb signs with “Room Occupied” signs.  Housekeeping and other staff will be allowed to enter the room even if the sign is on the door, but must knock and identify themselves first. Disney is notifying guests of the new policy when they arrive so as not to surprise them.

Random trivia:   Pack dryer sheets in your suitcases.    They will keep everything smelling fresh.
