Every now and then I get a question about a bereavement fare. Bereavement fares were once pretty common among U.S. airlines for domestic travel. However, there are now only two large U.S. airlines that offer bereavement fares: Alaska and Delta. Alaska will give 10 per cent off the lowest refundable fare but only seven days or less before travel with seats subject to availability and length of stay limitations. Delta offers unspecified “additional flexibility on the best published fares”. You cannot book these fares online. You have to call the reservation center. You will need to provide documentation including dates, relationship to the deceased, and notifications from a doctor and mortuary. Most airlines have dropped bereavement fares because it was too difficult to police the amount of forged doctor and funeral home documents. Many times the lowest fare an airline offers may be better than a bereavement fare so always good to double-check.
- Try your best not to provide payment information over free WiFi connections, such as those found in hotels or cafes when travelling.
- Take warnings seriously, never providing confidential data on a website which your browser has specifically warned you about.
- Credit cards or wallets can be stolen and used for both card not present fraud and stolen identity fraud. More sophisticated fraudsters steal both the credit card data and the PIN code via skimmers placed in ATMs or payment terminals, together with cameras or other surveillance methods.
- Another common scam involves a call from what is apparently the hotel front desk asking for your credit card number confirmation. When the number they claim to have is confirmed wrong, they request the correct number.
- Never give out your credit card number over the phone, unless you are absolutely sure who is on the receiving end, and never provide your PIN code.
- Make sure no one is watching when you type in your PIN code, and use bank ATMs only.
- Don’t be tempted to follow someone who directs you to a better ATM.
The latest news this week out of Homeland Security indicates that they plan to move forward with enhanced security measures but those measures do not include an expanded ban on laptops for airlines and airports that follow the new guidelines of enhanced passenger screening, heightened screening of personal electronic devices, increasing security protocol around aircraft and passenger areas, and deploying advanced technology, expanded canine screening, and establishing additional pre clearance locations. After months of speculation, the Department of Homeland Security plans to move forward with enhanced security measures that do not include an expanded ban on laptops for airports and airlines that follow the new guidelines. DHS adds there is no change to what passengers can and cannot bring onboard, but people flying to the U.S. may experience “additional screening of their person and property.” The agency is deliberately vague about the timing, saying the new measures will largely roll out over the next several weeks and months.
