Travel News for Week of March 18

By March 18, 2018Blog

Hi Everyone,

Disney announced this week that they will institute a parking fee at their resorts,  effective for reservations after March 21, 2018.  Complimentary self-parking is available while enjoying select dining, shopping, entertainment, and recreation experiences at Disney Resort hotels.

Standard Overnight Parking charges per Resort Category: Disney Value Resorts: $13 per night;
Disney Moderate Resorts: $19 per night; Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts: $24 per night

Complimentary standard parking is available to Guests staying at Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Each campsite provides parking space for one (1) motorized vehicle.

Las Vegas long ago instituted resort fees, but last week, two popular hotels, the Venetian and the Palazzo, raised their so-called resort fees to $45 a night. That’s up from $39 a night previously, and now the highest such fees in Las Vegas.several properties announced a hike in those as well.   Many of the upscale properties on the strip are at $39 a night.

The cruise lines continue to upgrade and expand.  An article in Travel Weekly gave us a glimpse of what what Royal Caribbean is doing.  They are upping the ante on amenities, facilities and services across its land-based private islands and ships in what company officials described Wednesday as a “multibillion-dollar” effort.   Royal Caribbean’s initiative is highlighted by the debut of a new, $200 million “Global Private Island Collection” at the company’s private island in CocoCay, Bahamas in 2019. CocoCay will be the company’s first private island to offer Royal Caribbean cruisers a “Perfect Day Island Collection,” a series of “unrivaled and exclusive” private island destinations around the world.    Royal Caribbean will eventually expand the program to include its private islands in Labadee, Haiti and at ports of call in Asia and Australia, said Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean’s president and CEO. “We said, ‘let’s apply the same expertise we did in building our Oasis-class ships to our private islands to create the perfect day,’” he said.   Upon its 2019 premiere, guests will find a new CocoCay, transformed with a series of new attractions. The Thrill Waterpark will feature two water towers with 13 slides, which company officials say are the most slides at any waterpark in the Caribbean.   There will also be a large freshwater pool, a helium balloon float, and over the water cabanas.

One of my friends and fellow traveler passed an article to me from Travel and Leisure regarding steps you should take just before leaving for a trip.   We have talked about some of these in previous blogs but it never hurts to repeat them, and some of the things on the list are brand new:

1. Alert your credit card company.  2. Alert your mobile phone company to insure you have the correct plan for travel.  3. Notify your home security system operator.    4. Confirm your reservations.   5. Make advance payments on bills that will arrive while your are gone. 6.  Check the weather  7. Clean out the refrigerator and run the disposal.   8.  Leave an itinerary with family or a friend.  9.  Clean out your wallet.  10.  Hold your mail. 11.Bring in outdoor furniture. These are all really good tips.
