Travel News for Week of March 25

By March 25, 2018Blog

Hotels go through a lot of linens!   Westin has found a great way to recycle those.  The company has created a new industry-first sustainability program called Project Rise: ThreadForward, which will collect, process and reweave hotel bed linens, transforming them into thousands of pairs of children’s pajamas.  The pajamas will then be distributed to children in need whose circumstances can contribute to shortened and more fragmented sleep.  The new program kicks off April 16 and will give the gift of better sleep in cities around the world, from New York to Toronto, to Mexico City and Cape Town.

Disney World is gearing up for summer.   They announced a new promo for select Disney Resort hotels.  With this offer, you can save on rooms at select Disney Resort hotels for stays most nights June 11 through August 1, 2018:  Save up to 25% on rooms, when you book by May 22, 2018.  Save up to 20% on rooms, when you book by August 1, 2018.   This offer is limited to select Disney hotels.

I read an article this week by a noted travel writer, Richard Turin, that I thought was fiction at first.  It is definitely not fiction.   The municipal water department in Paris, in concert with the mayor, has embarked on a new project called Fontaine Petillante, the aim of which is to encourage Parisians to drink more healthful water and to reduce the number of plastic water bottles in the city’s landfills.    The result of this initiative is that every single neighborhood in Paris will have at least one, free for all, sparkling-water fountain. The water has been tested, and it is of Perrier taste and quality. Parisians, and those fortunate enough to spend time in their city, will now have large supplies of sparkling water available in public fountains.   It will be available everywhere, and one need only hold a container beneath the tap to enjoy what one critic described as “cool, but not icy, extremely fizzy with a really fine prickle of bubble mousse.”     The aim of this initiative is two fold-encourage people to drink water and reduce the amount of plastic in their landfills.

Just an FYI:  If you are looking for a January rental on the beach next year, let me know as a friend has a great 2 bedroom condo for rent on Marco Island.
