Travel News for Week of March 4

By March 4, 2018Blog

Hi Everyone,

Just when you think you’ve heard everything, something else comes along.   I’ve read two articles this week that spoke of another concept that some airlines are getting closer to adopting.  Dynamic pricing could give an airline the ability to tailor air fare offers based on who is searching. What that might mean is that once an airline identifies the person making an inquiry, the airline can then look back at their data on that individual for their flying history.  They could then use your flying history to generate a person-specific fare that differs from the offer some other shopper might get.   Experts say such technology could be used to offer discounts to loyal customers or to induce a new customer an especially affordable ticket.  It could also be used to offer a higher fare to people they perceive won’t be put off by a higher ticket price.

American Airlines  said on Thursday it would begin basic economy pricing on some long-haul flights.   Starting in April, they will offer no-frills tickets on select trans-Atlantic flights as it seeks to fight off large rivals and emerging competition from low-cost carriers.   Basic economy tickets typically include fewer complimentary offerings and instead offer add-on fees for seat selection, checked bags and other services.

USA Today offered this advice about how to avoid fees on your rental car: 1. Tolls: Car rental companies add extra fees for using their transponders, sometimes charging by the day. Either bring your own toll transponder or avoid tolls with a reliable mapping app. 2. High insurance rates: Car rental insurance can be found in unexpected places, including your own credit card or travel insurance policy.
