Travel News for Week of October 1

By October 1, 2017Blog

Hi Everyone,

Delta Air Lines announced it will become the first global carrier in the United States to offer free mobile messaging. Starting today, Delta will offer its customers the opportunity to access free mobile messaging via iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The service will be available on more aircraft than any other carrier.   American Airlines is going to do the same but I haven’t seen the start date for them.

October is Plan a Cruise Month and the cruise lines are offering a variety of special promotions.   If a cruise is in your future,  this is a good time to take advantage of some of the specials.

If you are planning a Caribbean cruise in the near future and are worried that none of your ports will be open, you may be worrying for nothing.   Tourism is the number 1 industry in most islands so getting up and running is critical to the health of the population.    It is absolutely true that Puerto Rico has been devastated and it will be some time before they are back to normal.  Our prayers are with the people of Puerto Rico as they continue to struggle to get the aid they need.   The US and British Virgin Islands have also been hard hit but they are working hard to get back up and running.    The western and southern Caribbean islands were mostly untouched by the hurricanes so those ports are just fine.    Cruise ships are adjusting their itineraries on a daily basis to insure that things run as smoothly as possible.   Most importantly, there are a lot of islanders that have had their homes demolished, and their livelihoods disrupted.    When it is safe to return to an island, cruise ships and tour operators are doing so, and the sooner that happens, the quicker people’s lives can be put back together.

If you are thinking about holiday travel, Smarter Travel reminds us  that there are certain days that you will need to avoid:

Thanksgiving weekend is the busiest time of the year for airlines. The worst days to fly are the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (this year, November 22) and the following Sunday (this year, November 26).  The further away from these days you can travel, the better off you’ll be.

The biggest year-end holidays fall on Mondays in 2017, making for a plethora of “worst” holiday travel days. For Christmas they’re Friday, December 22, plus the 23rd and 24th. For New Year’s avoid Friday, the 29th, and Tuesday, January 2nd.
