Luxury Travel has a great article about social media posting while on vacation courtesy of NordVPN. They claim that while most people would not share their home address online, about half of people on vacation post pictures while on vacation which essentially tells everyone that your home is empty. NordVPN offers a few good suggestions:
- Wait till you get home to post your travel pictures. Those who really need to share their photos, should at least wait till they are back home, and their home is no longer empty.
- Make sure social media setting are private. One of the most important things before sharing is to make sure that the settings are set on private sharing with friends, or a select group of friends, and your photos are not visible to everyone..
- Protect your location. Don’t show your actual location by using a VPN. A VPN is a Virtual Private Network that hides your IP address and your location. By connecting to another country’s server, you can set your location to virtually any place in the world.
- Understand the dangers of free public Wi-Fi. Cafes, shops, and even school cafeteria offer unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Users need to be especially cautious when connecting to these networks – as they can easily be monitored. Hackers can easily position themselves as a Wi-Fi hotspot or use special software to steal data from unprotected networks. One of the best ways to safely use public Wi-Fi is by installing a VPN.
It’s still possible to make sure your friends see your vacation photos – but it’s important to be careful with privacy and to follow these guidelines.
Travel Insurance-should you get it or not? As we’ve watched the tragedies unfold in Texas, the Caribbean, and the Southeast US, many are asking if they should purchase additional travel insurance. I am an advocate for travel insurance. Do they cover everything? No, but they cover a lot! However, travel insurance is designed to offer protection against sudden and unforeseen situations and events. In the cases of a hurricane, when it becomes a named storm, it also becomes a ‘foreseeable event’ with known potential to affect your travel. If you buy travel insurance after a storm is named, your plan normally won’t provide coverage for storm-related claims. The best way to insure coverage is to purchase your insurance when you deposit your vacation.
