Travel News for Week of September 24

By September 24, 2017Blog

Hi Everyone,

Last week I mentioned that we had just finished a river cruise through the Burgundy and Provence regions of France.    We were privileged to participate in a pilgrimage right after the river cruise that took us to Fatima, Burgos, Fatima, and Barcelona.    I have included a few pics of our time on the river and also in Fatima.  I’ll include a few more next week.   We have small passageways in the town of Viviers, a hospital for the indigent in Beaune,  a castle in Lyon at night, another passageway in Beaune.

Getting through airport security can seem like it takes forever, but if you have “SSSS” printed on your boarding pass, you’re in for even more screening.  Business Insider points out that this stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection and it entails a 10-30 minute additional screening that could include any of the following: a thorough search of your bags, a full body pat down, and questions about your travel plans.  This is a risk-based passenger prescreening program that enhances security by identifying low and high-risk passengers before they arrive at the airport by matching their names against trusted traveler lists and watch lists. Secure Flight is a risk-based passenger prescreening program that enhances security by identifying low and high-risk passengers before they arrive at the airport by matching their names against trusted traveler lists and watchlists,”  If you get this type of message frequently, you may want to check to see if you are on a watch list by mistake.

September marks the U.S. Department of State’s Passport Awareness Month, since this year is particularly important ahead of some impending passport changes.   Your passport is valid for 10 years, and a child’s passport is valid for five. However, many countries require you to have validity through six months after your return date in order to travel. So, check your expiration date this month and mark down when you should renew your passport, especially if you travel overseas frequently. Passports can take anywhere from four to six weeks to renew, or three weeks via expedited service that’ll cost you an extra $60.

A few things to keep in mind if you’re applying for a passport this year:

• Check to see if you’re eligible to renew by mail; this is the fastest and easiest way to get your new passport.

• As of November 2016, a passport photo is no longer valid if you’re wearing glasses.

• An invalid photo is the No. 1 reason a passport application is rejected, so make sure to follow these photo-taking tips before you submit your application.
