Travel News for Week of November 3

By November 3, 2019Blog

Hi Everyone,

The Department of Transportation mandates that travelers can expect a full refund for cancellation from an airline for any flight they book, as long as cancellation is made within 24 hours of booking.   However, if you decide to book with one of the big online companies, they have the right to charge you a cancellation fee. Those fees can range from $30-$75 per ticket.    They can do that because the DOT mandate covers the airlines.  If you don’t book with them or have your travel agent book with them, pay attention to the fine print.

Disney’s newest cruise ship has been named the Disney Wish.   The Wish will set sail in early 2020.   Additionally, Disney has reached agreement with its shipbuilder for three new vessels.   They will be powered by liquefied natural gas.  The new ships will boast 1250 guest staterooms, larger than Disney’s Dream or Fantasy ships.

The holiday season is upon us and getting through airport security will become more of an issue as the crowds increase.   Many people who travel at the holidays are not frequent travelers and sometimes are unfamiliar with what you can and cannot take through security.  Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

  • You can take food through security, but a spokesperson for the TSA states:  “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it is considered a liquid or a gel  and falls under the 3-1-1 rule. ( 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart size resealable bag)
    • This means things like cream cheese, peanut butter, Nutella, cranberry sauce, salsa, honey, hummus,  and gravy must conform to the liquids rule.   (If they are already spread in a sandwich you are good to go.)
  • Pies and cakes are allowed but they are count as a carry on.
  • Get your water bottle filled after security or buy a bottle of water.  You cannot take it through security unless it is frozen solid.
