Travel News for Week of November 6

By November 6, 2022Blog

Hi Everyone,

If you are a cruiser, you know that internet is not the same aboard a cruise ship as it is at home.  Cruise lines have worked hard to bring more stable and faster internet but it has been a struggle. Typically,  internet signals beam down from satellites circling the Earth.  It was been a challenge to have stable signals from a moving ship.  Starlink, an internet service developed by Space X, employs a constellation of thousands of satellites. and they are having some success.  Several cruise lines, notably the Royal Caribbean Group, are experimenting with Starlink and have reported faster speeds and better bandwidth. -Travel Weekly

Prices seem to be increasing in every area of our lives.   Friday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that membership in their Pre-check program would decrease from $85 to $78.   Renewals will remain the same at $70.   Not a huge savings for sure, but it’s a good time to get into this expedited airport security screening program if you’ve not done so yet.  Of course, if you have certain credit cards, this program may be free for you although you must still apply.

In the past couple of years, car rentals have been expensive and a bit dicey.   There is no real guarantee that the car you have reserved will be waiting for you when you arrive.  Holiday periods are the worst.   You may consider prepaying for your rental to help insure that you have a car upon arrival.   Sign up for membership with the company you are using. Make sure you enter your airline and flight number when you reserve to increase th chances that your car will still be waiting for you if you are delayed.  Airport rental services will be very busy if you are traveling during the holidays.  You may consider a rental car agency off airport property.  It is definitely not as convenient but may be worthwhile in price and service.

Huffington Post had an article this week that might help to make those long haul flights a little more comfortable. When traveling:
  • Wear comfortable clothes that you can layer.  Make sure your shoes aren’t too tight.  Loosen the laces.
  • Don’t sit near the restrooms.   It can become uncomfortable when a line forms.   Sit away from the restroom and  when you do need to use it,   take that opportunity to  walk and stretch.
  • Try to avoid checking the time.  I love that little screen map that shows you where you are but it only makes you realize you have a long way to go.
  • Makes sure you bring ear plugs and a good neck pillow if you plan to sleep.
  • Have some access to entertainment: a book, crossword puzzles, a movie, etc.
  • Try to select your seat in advance.  If you intend to sleep, choose a window seat if possible.  Avoid that middle seat if you can.   Try to upgrade to economy comfort and get a little more legroom.
  • Get up and walk around.  It is really important for your circulation.
  • Bring some snacks. -Huffington Post
