Travel News for Week of October 20

By October 20, 2019Blog

Hi Everyone,

I have talked about this before but this week I saw an amazing statistic:  Nearly one in four consumers are deceived by online booking scams and dishonest marketing practices by fraudulent and misleading travel websites according to the American Hotel and Lodging Association.  Third party booking sites translated to $5.7 billion in online booing scams.   Many times this comes from websites that mimic hotel websites and call centers but are not actually affiliated with the hotel at all.

Forty percent of consumers were upset to learn that when they comparison shop among the big online companies like Trivago, Kayak, Expedia, and others, they usually just comparing two companies: Expedia and Priceline which together contral 95% of the online travel market.-Travel Market Report, 10/11/2019

I am often asked by people if they should lock their luggage when flying.   I firmly believe in locking it.  Of course, you must purchase a TSA approved lock so that in case the TSA decides to open your suitcase, they will be able to get into it without cutting off your lock.  Many new suitcases come with the approved lock built right into the suitcase.  I actually lock my suitcase in hotels if I am going to  be gone for any length of time.  Many times my computer will not fit in the room safe but I can lock it in the suitcase if I can’t take it with me.  Certainly, people can get into locked suitcases but the idea is to make it a little tougher to get into than a criminal would like.

A Qantas plane took off from New York on Friday and didn’t stop until it reached Sydney 19 hours later, setting the record for the world’s longest nonstop commercial passenger flight.  This was a pilot flight to assess the health and well being of the 49 passengers and crew aboard the flight as Qantas explores offering “ultra long” flights.   The company is seeking to launch nonstop flights between Australia’s east coast and New York and London.  The will test the London to Sydney route in November and then decide by the end of the year whether to offer the new routes. –Washington Post
