A cloud of volcanic ash spewing from Europe’s most active volcano has closed one of Sicily’s largest airports, leading to delayed, cancelled, and diverted flights.   This is very reminiscent of my time in Italy several years ago when a volcano in Iceland  disrupted air travel for several days and caused our group to remain in Rome for 5 extra days.  You can’t fight Mother Nature.

If you are traveling to Italy and want want to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that after 8 years of an international effort to stabilize the structure, that effort has resulted in the structure being declared stable.   It is celebrating its 850th birthday.-CNN

Hi Everyone,

The news out of Maui this week was absolutely devastating.   The loss of life and property is almost unimaginable.  The loss of the town’s structures, including many of Hawaii’s historical artifacts, is also very sad.   Our prayers are with the people of Maui as they mourn their loved ones and try to rebuild their lives.

If you fly Frontier Airlines, you will want to get to the airport at bit earlier.   Frontier just announced that they will close all their ticket counters 60 minutes prior to a scheduled departure.   This won’t affect you if you don’t have a bag to check or need to get a boarding pass but if you need either of these things, get to the airport early.

Disney just updated their restaurant reservation system.  If you are trying to get a reservation you will soon be able to view every time slot available for a desired visit.   It will also be clearer which meals are being served at a given time.  You’ll be able to see every time slot available for all restaurants, property wide.  The cancellation policy is also being revamped. Most dining locations will offer the ability to cancel reservations up to two hours before to avoid the penalty fee.  It is currently 24 hours.  All updates are expected to go into effect in the coming weeks.

Los Angeles International Airport has banned the sale of plastic water bottles as part of their sustainability effort. It is recommended that passengers bring a reusable bottle and fill it at hydration stations located around the airport.

Hi Everyone,

Greece will limit daily visitors to the famous Acropolis beginning next month in an effort to control crowding.    The Acropolis is yet another monument  that has fallen victim to overcrowding.   Beginning September 4, entrances will be capped at 20,000 people a day as part of a pilot program.  Entrances will be divided into time zones from 8am to  8pm each day,This pilot program for  Greece  will go into effect permanently in April of next year for all archeological  sites that utilize electronic tickets.

Since the Panemic, I think many of us have become more germ conscious.  Here is an article that lists many of the germiest places you may encounter while traveling.

Hotel rooms

1. Toilette handles
2. Remotes and door knobs
3. Desktops, refrigerate handles, nightstands

Use the shower cap or ice bucket liner to cover the remote before using.  Use a sanitizing wipe to wipe down all doorknobs, handles nightstands and desktops.

The germiest places in hotel common areas.:

  1. Elevator button
  2. Luggage rack handrails
  3. Bathroom doors
  4. Front desk
  5. Elevator handrails

Airport check-ins

  1.  Pin pad at check in kiosks
  2.  Check in counter
  3. Baggage office counter

On the airplane

1.  Passenger head rests

2. Overhead air vent dials

3.Tray table latch.

Believe it or not airline bathroom toilet handles had less germs than the three places listed above.   Again, the best safeguard is to get those sanitizing wipes out.   This list was compiled by Smarter Travel.

Hi Everyone,

A couple of years ago, Venice banned large cruise ships from the Venetian Lagoon.   The cruise ships that were docking in Venice must now dock at other ports and bus their passengers to Venice.   It looks as though Amsterdam will be the next city to ban cruise ships from the city center.  Although the ships will have other places to dock near the city, it won’t be quite as convenient for passengers going into Amsterdam

United States passport holders have long traveled throughout most of the world without having to worry about visa applications: American travelers currently have visa-free access to almost 200  destinations worldwide, but that’s set to change next year, as the European Union prepares new travel document requirements for American tourists.  The new regulations are called the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).  When the system launches in 2024, all US visitors will need to apply for the ETIAS and receive approval prior to departure.  It will just require a quick online application with approval delivered via email. Most applicants should receive approval within an hour but could take up to 96 hours.  Once approved, this authorization is valid for multiple entries over the course of three years, or until the traveler’s passport expires.   Cost will be approximately $8.-Conde Nast Traveler

Hi Everyone,

The United States is in the midst of a very dangerous heat wave.   We are not alone.  If you are planning travel to Europe yet this summer make sure you take precautions.   Italy just issued an “extreme” heatwave alert expected to bring record temperatures.   In Greece, the Acropolis was closed for the second straight day due to heat.   Spain and Portugal are also experiencing record temps.   In some locales, temps will rise to about 118 degrees F.

For those of you traveling to Mexico in the near future and worried about safety, the Mexico military is guaranteeing your safety in the areas of Cancun.  Not sure how you guarantee anything like this but Mexico has invested in securing the region with new equipment and tools to keep residents and visitors protected.   There have also been legal battles fought between taxis, buses, and Uber.  Uber just won the right to operate in Mexico but there have been blockades and stoppages of Uber vehicles.  I would strongly suggest that you pre-arrange transfers with existing transfer companies so that you don’t encounter an unpleasant situation.     –adapted from Travel Pulse

In a sign of continued strength for cruise travel, Holland America Line bookings on July 11 were higher than on any day in the brand’s 150 year history.  Booking revenues also achieved the line’s single day record.  Most of the bookings were for 2024 and 2025.  I can tell you that I don’t doubt this for a minute.  have been trying to book people into Alaskan cruises and the ships are already very full for next year.   It appears that cruising is back in a big way. If you are anticipating a cruise, I would not wait too long.

Hi Everyone,

When traveling overseas the rules for gratuities change. Americans are used to tipping 15-25% in restaurants. We also tip cab drivers, bell hops, housekeepers, etc.   Tipping is different in other parts of the world.  Here is just a little bit of info about tipping in other countries.  If you travel to Japan, China, or South Korea, tipping is not usually done and may even be construed as insulting.  In most of mainland Europe, 10% is considered the norm but you should look at your check to see if  the service fee has already been added.   Also, don’t leave the tip on the table. Give it directly to your waiter.  If you want to show some appreciation for your  hotel housekeeper, leave 2-3 eros per night. Taxi drivers do not need to be tipped but rounding up is acceptable.  If you want to see the rest of the info, it is contained in this week’s  Insider Travel Report.com

Precheck is a nice alternative when going through TSA and well worth the cost.  Most of the time it has a shorter line, and you don’t need to take shoes off or take your laptop out of your carry on.  Sometimes, though, even if you have Precheck , your boarding pass may not include TSA PreCheck.  Most of the times that happens because it hasn’t been added to your profile.   You can ask the airline employee to add it and reprint your boarding pass when you drop off luggage.

This summer has seen record numbers of people flying.   Go to the airport early, pack your patience and know that you will most likely see longer lines so have a plan and factor in the time it will take to drop luggage, get through security, and get to your gate.

In previous blogs, I  mentioned the wait times for getting or renewing passports right now is lengthy.   Although some people have received their passports in a reasonable time, this week the State Department site states that routine wait times are 10-13 weeks and  expedited passports are taking 7-9 weeks.  This does not include the time it takes to get your submission to the passport office or the time it takes to mail it back to you.

Hi Everyone,

One of the first questions people ask me when planning a trip is “How many suitcases can I bring?”    Unless you are going on a round the world tour, one checked bag and one small carry on is usually my answer.  Here are some hints to help you stay under that airline 50lbs:

  • Use packing cubes. They come in a variety of sizes and I swear by them as your clothes stay put and I can tell at a glance if I’m missing something in my suitcase.   You can purchase packing cubes from a variety of sources. I happen to like Ebags.com but there are others as well.
  • Compression bags are also useful.  You can get all the air out of your bag which increases the amount of room in your suitcase.
  • Roll your clothes.    You can’t roll everything but you can save some space if you roll some things.  I don’t find that I need to do that since I use cubes but other people tell me that rolling works well.
  • Cut down on the amount of shoes you take.   You just don’t need a lot of different shoes.   One pair  to wear, another in case your shoes get wet, and possibly one pair of nicer shoes.
  • You can roll your socks and put them right in your extra shoes.   I think putting them as a base between the ribs of the suitcase makes sense.
  • Color Coordinate your outfits and try to stay in the same color palette so you can mix and match.

A friend once told me she lays everything out that she wants to take and then removes half of it.  It’s not a bad idea.

If you are going on a tour, your tour operator will limit the amount of luggage you can take.   If you are cruising, there usually isn’t a limit but who wants to be tripping over luggage for a week.  Once you are unpacked, open your luggage and put it under the bed.  Great place for dirty clothes.   If you are traveling independently, the last thing you want to do is lug a lot of weight around.   Some of the above was adapted from the Points Guy!

Whatever you do, keep traveling!

Have a wonderful Fourth of July!

Hi Everyone,

We just returned from a river cruise between Memphis and New Orleans.   We had a great group with us and went to many wonderful venues from Elvis’ Graceland to a Swamp Water Cruise.   The entire ship went to a wonderful concert in Greenville that included a police escort to the venue!  The entire town helped to make this event happen, from the cooks in the kitchen to the servers and performers.

I have attached just a few of the pics that either someone from our group or I took along the way:

Our ship, the town concert, Graceland, RoseDale Mansion, St. Francisville, our swamp cruise.

In other news:

Typically when flying to Europe, the flights depart in the afternoon or early evening.  Delta may be about to change that.  It looks like they will have a New York itinerary to Paris in the morning that will arrive in the late evening allowing flyers to just go to bed and make it easier to keep the same wake-sleep schedule.

If you will be flying with children soon, You may wonder which airports are the most kid friendly and thick are the least kid friendly.  The three highest rated airports with kid friendly activities is Las Angeles, LaGuardia, and Logan Airports.  Airports at the bottom of the list and rated Ft. Lauderdale, Nashville, and Dallas-Fort Worth  Airports were ranked by their availability of charging ports, family bathrooms, and special rooms for those with infants.

Have a great week!

Lynn

Last week a couple of very popular destinations was in the news.  Jamaica was moved to a  Level 3 due to crime.  Punta Cana remained at Level 2 but with a warning to be vigilant regarding increased crime and sexual assault although it noted that the resort areas are safer.   It is very easy to check the travel advisories at    travel.state.gov.   Look for international travel or travel advisories.

Las Vegas continues to evolve.  They will host a Formula One race in November,  the Super Bowl in January, and a new entertainment venue called the Sphere.   It will be an immersive experience costing $2.2 billion and capable of holding 20,000 people.  At 336 feet tall and 516 feet wide it will be the world’s larges spherical structure.

Select national parks, including Glacier, Yosemite, and Arches, require advance reservations to enter as well as permits for popular hikes.  Even parks that do not require advance registrations may still limit capacity during the Sumer months so if you are planning a trip to the National Parks, check whether you will need advance reservation and if not, get there early in the day.

Day Trip Opportunity

Before the pandemic, we used to take people on bus trips to Shipshewana for what became known as the brown bag tour.  We will take this trip on Thursday, August  24.  We will visit several small cottage businesses, have lunch at an Amish home, and learn a bit of Amish culture.  This tour has always been popular so if you are interested, let me know.
