Pickleball seems to be everywhere these days. Celebrity Cruises has announced that they will join a growing number of cruise lines offering pickle ball courts on their ships.
We have all watched as the storms in California the last few weeks were displayed on the evening news. If you are planning a trip in the near future to the California State Parks or National Parks, please know that they had problems as well. Yosemite will partially reopen this week but the storm damaged roads and facilities so there are parts of the park still unavailable. Yosemite was not the only park damaged so it would be prudent to call ahead for the opening schedules for any California State or National Park to inquire about their status before visiting.
Cruise lines will sometimes offer a promo that includes prepaid gratuities. Those gratuities cover tips for housekeeping and dining room staff members: waiters, room stewards, etc. They also cover people they you don’t see like the people who wash your bedding. Those gratuities do not cover tips for bar service, spa service, or gratuities for local guides and drivers. Some cruise lines automatically tack 15-20% onto bar and spa bills. Some also add automatic gratuities to your check at the extra-fee restaurants on board. If you don’t include prepaid gratuities to your reservation before sailing, the cruise line will generally include the gratuities on the bill you receive the last night of the cruise. Some upscale cruise lines just include gratuities in the price so you don’t have to worry about them at all. It is important, though, to recognize that the people onboard the ship are usually hustling around trying to make life easier for you so however you take care of the gratuities, know that they are really important to the people taking care of you.

If you are taking the family to Disney World this year, AllEars.net has a tip for you. There are some electrical outlets and built in USB ports hidden in an area themed to the movie, Tangled, just steps from It’s a Small World in Fantasyland. It’s one of only two inpark mobile charging stations at Walt Disney World. the other is located near Pete’s Silly Sideshow. This is more important than you might think at first glance. You will need your mobile app, My Disney Experience, where you can manage Genie+, make dining reservations, access your hotel room, and much more. The last thing you’ll want is a dead phone. You can also find a FuelRod station where compact portable phone batteries are available for purchase. There are also outlets to be found built into the bars at the park’s restaurants and lounges like the Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom.-allears.net

If you are going to travel this year, you will most likely have at least one or two of your electronics with you such as a phone, laptop, iPad, etc. Travel Daily has some good suggestions for keeping your data safe while traveling.
Keep your devices secure by using strong passwords. Lock your laptop, phone, etc. when not in use. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels, and other public places. Many times those networks are not secure and leave you vulnerable to hacking attempts.
Avoid using publicly accessible computers and USB charging stations. Computers you use in hotels, business centers, airports and other public places might be infected with malware that can steal your credentials and credit card info. Do not enter any sensitive info on these devices. Public charging stations might be just as unsafe as criminals may put malware or spyware on them to get access to your finances and personal data. Use USB data blockers.
Backup important data. When traveling, back up copies of your passport and other travel documents as well as financial and personal info. This way if your devices are lost or stolen, you will have a back up of all your important info.
Keep your software up to date for all your devices. Updates usually contain important security patches that make it harder for hackers to exploit their vulnerabilities. Make sure to do this before traveling as it doesn’t make sense to update it on a hotel or airport computer that may not be safe in th first place.
Beware of skimming. Skimming is a type of theft in which a device is attached to an ATM or other electronic payment system to steal credit card info. If you need to use an ATM, choose one at a bank, preferably when the bank is open so if there is a problem, you can get help right away.
Be cautious of QR codes. Criminals may create fake QR codes that look similar to legitimate ones and then place them on posters, signs, or even menus in cafes. When scanned, these fake QR codes can install malware on your device or take you to a phishing site where your info can be stolen.
Research tour operators and accommodations. Unscrupulous operators offer seemingly legitimate tours and activities at a low cost. Some of those activities could be either subpar or virtually nonexistent. Do your research. It is essential that you take proactive steps to secure the your personal and financial information while traveling.-Travel Daily, 3/4/23
If you do any amount of traveling, you will, sooner or later, find that your luggage has been damaged. There are some things you can do if your bag comes off the belt damaged.
Don’t leave the airport and think you can take care of it later. Go directly to the luggage office. If you leave the airport, you may forfeit all claims to reimbursement.
The Department of Transportation has clear rules about reimbursements for luggage and the rules can be different if you’ve flown internationally or domestically.
Document the damage. Take pictures of the damage to the outside and the inside particularly if your contents have been affected. Include a picture of your luggage tag receipt. Leave the luggage tags on your luggage.
Check your credit card to see if it includes luggage damage. You can also check with the manufacturer to see if they will stand behind the luggage.-Adaptedfrom Smarter Travel, 3/4/23
I have found that when we’ve had a problem and go directly to the luggage office, it is usually settled right there before we leave.

It seems as though every part of our country has had major issues with weather recently. Hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, and now snow in Southern California! We are not alone. I was just in Venice, Italy a month ago and everything appeared normal. This week I read an article about the low water levels in the canals and saw pictures of some of the canals reduced to mud. Scientists are blaming it on a variety of factors. The Alps have had less than half of their normal snowfall this year. Alpine snow represents the country’s primary water reserve as meltwater flows into the Po River which runs from the Alps down to the Adriatic Sa through Italy’s most populated regions. There is real worry about a prolonged drought. If Italy is on your bucket list, by all means, go. It is one of the most wonderful countries in the world.
If you rent a car and allow someone else to park it for you, you may not be insured if that person damages the car. I read an interesting article today in the Las Vegas Advisor: “A hotel valet attendant is not an authorized driver on any car rental contract. In fact, any unauthorized driver, including a valet who spends two minutes coming and going completely cancels all collision coverage from a credit card company and even the rental agency itself. Would the hotel be responsible if the valet is at fault. Probably, but imagine the headache trying to collect. Hopefully, the incident will have been caught on one of the thousands of cameras that exist in Vegas. – Check out the full article on Las Vegas Advisor.

Countries around the world are grappling with how to promote tourism while at the same time trying to keep their cities authentic and their citizens happy. Portugal is the latest country trying to find a balance. They have passed a series of laws that limit the number of Airbnb’s in their country. An influx of foreigners purchasing expensive homes to turn into Airbnb properties drove up the housing market and some towns and priced out the local population. The new laws are aimed at curbing that practice.
During the pandemic many hotels cut services to their customers. They eliminated daily housekeeping and things like free breakfasts. Some of those cuts look like they are going to be permanent. Marriott has announced that they are going with a tiered concept. Their lux properties lime St. Regis or Ritz Carlton will get some daily housekeeping. Their upscale properties like Marriott, Sheraton, Renaissance will get a “daily tidy”. While not a full cleaning, guests will get fresh towels and their trash emptied. Guests at “select-service” like Courtyard, Fairfield, SpringHill Suites will get a ‘tidy” treatment everyone other day. Some people don’t mind not having people entering their room when they aren’t there, but others would like towels refreshed. We’ll have to see how this plays out over time.-The Points Guy
Did you ever wonder what happens to old cruise ships? Some are sold to other cruise lines, but most end up in cruise ship graveyards. Decommissioned ships are almost always sent to one of two graveyards. The largest is in Alana, along India’s Gulf of Khambhat, which recycles more than half of the world’s decommissioned ships. the second largest is Aliaga in Turkey. the tear down process involves removing leftover fuel and stripping the ships of any furnishings and fixtures that can be sold. Scrap metal is sold or recycled, for the full article, check out “The Points Guy,

This may be the most bizarre travel story I’ve heard in a long time. A Belgian couple left their infant at a desk in the Tel Aviv airport as they ran to catch their flight. Apparently the baby did not have a ticket They were running so late that boarding had already closed by the time they arrived at check in. They were chased down by aircraft security who called police.
Have you ever wondered about the difference between first class and business class? Most planes today have either first or business but very few have both. What you can expect varies by airline and by the plane or route.
Offerings typically fall into three categories:
Domestic First Class: Usually a large recliner type seat
Long Haul Business Class: Most frequent fliers expect a fully flat bed, with direct aisle access.

In the past year, I have written about several tourist hot spots that have established some boundaries for tourists as the sheer number of people visiting some areas have overwhelmed the locals and threatened to destroy their way of lives. Amsterdam is the latest city to strengthen some rules. Amsterdam is set on shedding its image as a hedonistic party haven and have enacted some measures to address that perception. Much of the problem is centered in the red light district, and sales of marijuana and alcohol are going to be restricted. It is important to remember that the red light district is located in the De Wallen neighborhood and the residents have experienced a lot of nuisance from mass tourism, alcohol and drug abuse. New, very strict policies are going into effect. Sales of alcohol and marijuana will be strictly monitored and will become difficult to even find after late afternoon. This should be a good thing for the people who live in this area and also for tourists who would like to enjoy the canals, architecture, and sights of this neighborhood in the heart of the city.-Travel Pulse

The CDC has lowered the threat level for cruise ships as the agency recognizes the leadership and effectiveness of the cruise sector’s health and safety protocols. The CDC’s mandatory rules that the cruise lines have been operating under during the pandemic have expired, and the CDC is asking the cruise lines to opt into a voluntary program. 111 cruise ships from all major brands have done so. Furthermore, most have chosen to adhere to the government agency’s “Highly Vaccinated” category meaning ships sail with at least 95% of passengers and crew fully vaccinated. That tier permits cruise lines to operate their ships mask-free for both guests and crew anywhere onboard. Cruise lines are free to implement stricter guidelines if they wish and some cruise line have opted to do just that, at least for the present time.
Europe is finally going to fully open up with no testing requirements for fully vaccinated travelers across all European Union countries by the April Easter holidays. Unvaccinated travelers who can provide proof of a recent COVID infection with the past 180 days may also enter but may be required to test before arrival. The plans to make uniform entry rules across the EU bloc will apply to all non-EU arrivals including visitors from the US.
Cruise lines must also adapt to world conditions. If you have a cruise in the near future that was going to port in Russia, (probably St. Petersburg), you have probably already been notified that you will not be making that stop. Certainly, this is a minor adjustment with what is going on over there. Keep the people of Ukraine in your prayers.

I read an interesting article this week in Insider Travel Report. Here is an excerpt: “The Walt Disney Company has announced plans to introduce Storyliving by Disney, a group of new neighborhoods around the country infused with the company’s special brand of Disney Magic. These master planned communities are intended to inspire residents to foster new friendships, pursue their interests, and write the next chapter in their lives-all while enjoying the attention to detail, unique amenities and special touches that are Disney hallmarks.” At each location, including some neighborhoods for residents 55+, Disney Cast Members will operate the community association. The first Storyliving by Disney community, Cotino, will be built near Rancho Mirage in California’s Coachella Valley.-James Shillinglaw
Speaking of Disney, ticket prices increased at Walt Disney World February 16. Some shorter tickets have stayed the same, but most 4-day or longer tickets are higher by 4-8%. Disney Genie+, Park Hopper, Water Park upgrades, and parking fees have not changed.
Delta Airlines announced this week that in March they will begin serving hot meals again in First Class and will be bring back snack options in Coach. They are also partnering with Instacart allowing Sky Miles members to link their accounts with Instacart to earn miles on purchases.
The fledgling spaceline, Virgin Galactic, has announced it is now selling tickets for seats on its rocket ships to members of the general public. The cost is $450,000 per seat. If you are interested, I know a good travel agent who can help you book this trip.

More and more countries are opening their doors to travelers. The latest country to open this past week was Australia and d. Almost every country has requirements that must be met before you arrive, and these requirements change frequently. One of the sites that I have used ever since the world began to open is Sherpa-Move Freely. Once you enter their site, you input your vaccination statues, when and where you wish to travel, and you will see the requirements for travel. Of course, you can also check the www.travel.state.gov You will get good information from either site.
Cruise lines have also begun to loosen restrictions. Both Norwegian and Royal Caribbean have eliminated the mask mandate at most venues for vaccinated passengers. At this point, crew will still be required to wear a mask. There are still testing requirements in effect.
Spirit and Frontier airlines have proposed a merger. They may have a difficult time getting anti-trust approval from the Justice department so we’ll see what happens.
The CEO of Delta airlines recommended to the Dept of Justice that any person convicted of a disruption on board a flight should be added to the national “do not fly” list.

June 17-23, 2023New!! Viking Cruise down the Mississippi Join us as we cruise from Memphis to New Orleans on a cruise called Heart of the Delta. I was only able to get 10 cabins as Viking usually does not do groups on this cruise as it is too popular. I have very few cabins remaining. Believe it or not, I could not get cabins for 2022. We will begin our journey in Memphis, and sail to Vicksburg, Natchez, St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow, Louisiana before arriving in New Orleans. The cabins that I have are balcony cabins. Right now air is being offered for $399 per person out of Detroit. Let me know if you are interested. 1 cabin remaining.
