Travel News for the Week of November 10

By November 10, 2019Blog

Hi Everyone,

If you are a frequent traveler, it pays to get either TSA Precheck or Global Entry.    Capital Region International Airport in Lansing is hosting a TSA  pre-check event, November 28-22.   You can pre-enroll online, schedule a 5 minute finger printing appointment, and get your Known Traveler Number.  You can then enter it on your air reservations and begin to use it to go through the Precheck  lines.  The cost is $85 and once you are approved, you are good for 5 years.   To pre-enroll, go to identogo.com.   You may want to check with your credit card company as many cards now cover this cost for you.  If you don’t live near Lansing, check your local airport as these events are happening in many places.

There may be another good reason to enroll in TSA PreCheck.   The Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Safety Administration are exploring the feasibility of  passenger self-screening solutions at airport security checkpoints for those enrolled in TSA PreCheck.   While this is just in the exploration stages,  a solution could dramatically decrease wait times at TSA checkpoints.   Stay tuned.

The next time you travel don’t be surprised if you are asked to pay a tourist tax upon arrival.  At least 40 countries now charge some form of a tourist tax, including a number of European cities and US states.   Many times, tour operators may roll this tax into the price you pay for the tour, but you will pay it one way or the other.   Many of these taxes go to support the additional infrastructure made necessary by the increase in tourists. Some of these taxes also go toward protecting the natural environment in threatened areas.
